About this position

The University of Nottingham invites applications for a PhD Studentship focused on modelling the resilience of water distribution networks. Water distribution networks are vital infrastructure for society, ensuring the delivery of water to customers. These systems face multiple threats, including component failures due to aging infrastructure, climate change impacts from shifting weather conditions and environmental factors, and deliberate acts such as targeted terrorist activities.

The aim of this project is to develop a robust modelling approach for assessing the resilience of water networks. The research will involve creating a mathematical model and supporting research software to predict key performance indicators of water networks under scenarios where links are fully or partially failed. The project will investigate the impact of various threat types and identify critical links within the network that most significantly affect performance. A major component of the work will be proposing methods for optimal resource allocation to enhance the robustness and resilience of water networks against these threats.

This studentship offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the advancement of infrastructure resilience, combining civil engineering, environmental science, and mathematical modelling. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment at the University of Nottingham, working under the supervision of Dr Rasa Remenyte-Prescott. The project is suitable for graduates with a strong academic background in engineering, mathematics, or related disciplines, preferably at master's level. In exceptional cases, candidates with a 2:1 degree may be considered. The position is open to UK, EU, and international applicants.

Funding details are not specified; candidates are encouraged to explore available funding opportunities for postgraduate researchers. The studentship is available from October 2026, and applications are accepted until the position is filled. Early application is recommended. For further information or project enquiries, contact Dr Rasa Remenyte-Prescott at [email protected]. To apply, please use the online application portal provided by the University of Nottingham.
