PhD: The Psychological Burden of Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria from Patient and Healthcare Professional Perspectives Aston University in United Kingdom

This PhD project at Aston University investigates the psychological and quality of life impacts of Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU) from both patient and healthcare professional perspectives. CSU is a challenging autoimmune condition characterized by unpredictable hives and swelling, often with no clear trigger, and is associated with significant disease burden and mental health effects. Despite its impact, CSU remains under-researched, particularly in the UK context.

The project will employ qualitative interviews with patients and healthcare professionals, a cross-sectional survey to assess quality of life, and focus groups to explore improvements in patient care pathways. The research aims to fill critical gaps in understanding the psychosocial factors influencing CSU, such as stress, anxiety, depression, and the patient experience within the UK healthcare system.

This opportunity is ideal for candidates with a background in psychology or health psychology. Applicants should hold a First or Upper Second Class undergraduate degree or a Merit (or above) in a relevant postgraduate Masters, with equivalent qualifications from overseas considered. Experience in health psychology research is desirable but not essential, as training will be provided. The position is based at Aston University's Birmingham campus, with regular in-person attendance expected.

Funding covers Home tuition fees; overseas applicants must pay the difference between Home and Overseas fees (£17,712 for 2026/7). Applications are accepted year-round.
