About this position

This position offers an exciting opportunity to join the Hausmann group at ETH Zürich as either a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher, focusing on the molecular dissection of cellular crosstalk in the intestinal mucosa. The intestinal mucosa is a critical barrier that balances nutrient absorption with protection against microbial translocation, and its dysfunction can lead to diseases such as infections, metabolic disorders, and chronic inflammation. The group is particularly interested in the interactions between the intestinal epithelium, immune cells, and the microbiota, aiming to understand how these elements maintain homeostasis and how their imbalance triggers disease.

The research employs advanced in vivo and in vitro organoid and microbiota models, omics technologies, and bioengineering approaches to study cellular communication in both healthy and inflamed states. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment within the Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST), ETH Zürich, and will benefit from collaborations with the University of Zurich and access to state-of-the-art facilities.

Responsibilities include designing and conducting wet-lab experiments, analyzing complex data, communicating findings, participating in group meetings and journal clubs, and contributing to student supervision and teaching. The group is led by Dr. Annika Hausmann (SNSF Ambizione group leader) and is embedded in the Mucosal Immunology lab headed by Prof. Emma Slack.

Applicants should have experience in at least two relevant areas (bioinformatics, metabolomics, tissue/organoid culture, bacterial culture), with additional skills in mouse models, microbiology, bioengineering, or mucosal immunology considered beneficial. Good communication skills and fluency in English are required. The position is fully funded, with salary and benefits according to ETH Zürich standards, and offers additional perks such as public transport passes, sports facilities, childcare, and pension benefits. The starting date is flexible but should be no later than March 2026.

Applications must be submitted online and include a CV, summary of past research, motivation letter, relevant degrees/certificates, and two references. For further information, candidates may contact Dr.

Annika Hausmann (no applications via email). ETH Zürich is committed to diversity, inclusion, and sustainability, providing a supportive environment for professional and personal growth.
