The University of Bergen invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Study of Religion, with a focus on strong individual commitment in ancient Rabbinic Judaism. This three-year, full-time position is based at the Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion and is part of the ERC-funded RADHEART project, 'Radical Habits of the Heart: Emotions, Embodiment, and Strong, Individual Commitment in Ancient Religions,' led by Professor Laura Feldt. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research environment and collaborate closely with a team investigating the role of emotions and embodiment in religious commitment in the ancient world, particularly through the lens of Jewish and Christian formative traditions from the 6th century BC to the 7th century CE.

The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to the NARRATIVE work-package, focusing on ancient Rabbinic literature (2nd–7th century CE). Responsibilities include developing and executing an independent research project aligned with the RADHEART framework, publishing scientific works, presenting at conferences, and participating in project events such as workshops and writing retreats. The fellow will also collaborate with Professor Feldt and the research team, including co-editing a scholarly anthology relevant to their project.

Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in the study of religion, history of religion, religious studies, or a closely related field. Required qualifications include demonstrated expertise in ancient Jewish studies, philological proficiency in Rabbinic Hebrew/Aramaic, and a strong interest in comparative religion. Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential. Candidates must submit a project proposal related to the RADHEART project, a progress plan, and a publication plan, along with supporting documents such as transcripts, diplomas, a summary of the PhD thesis, a publication list, and up to five academic works. The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 657,000, with further increases based on seniority, and enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which provides a secure occupational pension scheme, disability and survivor benefits, and access to favorable housing loans.
