The University of Richmond's Data Science and Statistics Program is seeking applications for a two-year postdoctoral research position in the Distant Viewing Lab, starting August 2026. This opportunity, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, focuses on advancing open-source technology and AI methods for the computational analysis of visual culture in the humanities. The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate closely with project PIs Lauren Tilton and Taylor Arnold to develop educational resources, facilitate workshops, curate visual collections, and contribute to the Distant Viewing Toolkit and Conference.

Responsibilities include creating multimedia Open Educational Resources (OERs), preparing and facilitating workshops, curating diverse visual collections for the DV Data platform, and organizing the Distant Viewing Conference. The position also offers the chance to teach up to one course per semester in the Data Science and Statistics Program for extra compensation and to travel to international conferences.

Applicants from a broad range of disciplines—such as digital humanities, data science, computer science, information science, media studies, and visual culture studies—are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates will have experience or a strong interest in computational approaches to visual or multimodal materials, open-source software development, educational resource creation, or community-engaged scholarship with libraries, archives, and museums. A Ph.D. in any field is required by the time of appointment.

The Distant Viewing Lab, directed by Lauren Tilton and Taylor Arnold, is renowned for its work in computational analysis of visual culture, developing tools and datasets for large-scale research. The lab is supported by the Mellon Foundation and the University of Richmond, and has a strong record of publications and digital projects in the field.
