About this position

The University of Oslo invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Ecosystem Mapping and Modelling as part of the interdisciplinary “REMap” project, funded by the Research Council of Norway and led by Professor Anders Bryn. The project addresses the urgent need for improved ecosystem mapping methods to support conservation and sustainable land management in the face of increasing pressures from land use and climate change. REMap brings together stakeholders from industry, science, and policy management to co-develop advanced ecosystem mapping methodologies that enhance map quality, practical relevance, and applicability for decision-making.

The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to both field-based and model-based research approaches, developing frameworks for integrating ecosystem maps into ecosystem accounting and spatial planning. A key focus is on explicitly accounting for methodological uncertainty to improve the reliability and utility of ecosystem maps for conservation and policy. The project is highly interdisciplinary, involving ecology, spatial modelling, spatial planning, and sociology, and will utilize state-of-the-art tools for distribution modelling and experimental analysis. The successful candidate will join a national network of researchers, companies, and stakeholders, and will be expected to contribute to the publication and communication of project findings, as well as the development of guidelines for ecosystem mapping and application.

The position is based at the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo, and offers a full-time, temporary contract. Funding is provided by the Research Council of Norway. Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in environmental science, ecology, sociology, or a related field, and demonstrate experience in ecosystem mapping, spatial modelling, or interdisciplinary environmental research. Strong analytical skills and the ability to collaborate within a diverse research network are essential.

The application deadline is 30 November 2025. For further details and to apply, please visit the JobbNorge portal. For academic inquiries, contact Professor Anders Bryn at [email protected].
