About this position

The Experimental Mineral Physics (EMP) group at the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology, ETH Zürich, led by Professor Motohiko Murakami, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in ultrahigh-pressure mineral physics and geophysics. This three-year, fixed-term position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research exploring the internal structure, mineralogy, and evolution of the Earth and other planets.

The research project centers on high-pressure and high-temperature experimental work using advanced techniques such as laser-heated and externally-heated diamond anvil cells, laser spectroscopic methods (including Raman and Brillouin scattering), and synchrotron X-rays. The aim is to determine the physical properties of deep planetary materials, advancing our understanding of planetary interiors and their evolution.

The successful candidate will perform experimental research in collaboration with group members, participate in teaching, and undertake infrastructural tasks within the EMP group. The position is based at ETH Zürich, a world-leading university renowned for its excellence in science and technology, fundamental research, and societal impact. ETH Zürich offers numerous benefits, including public transport season tickets, car sharing, sports facilities, childcare, and attractive pension plans. The university values diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive culture, promoting equality of opportunity and a climate-neutral future.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Earth Sciences, Physics, or a related field, with expertise in high-pressure mineral physics, mineralogy, chemistry, or elasticity of deep planetary interiors. High-pressure experimental skills using diamond anvil cell apparatus and the ability to develop optical, spectroscopic, or infrared laser heating systems are highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate an excellent academic record and fluency in English.

To apply, submit your application online via the ETH Zurich application portal, including your CV, publication list, statement of research interests, and names and contact information of at least two references. Applications sent by email or postal services will not be considered. For further information, contact Professor Motohiko Murakami at [email protected]. Please note that inquiries regarding application status or evaluation details will not be answered.

ETH Zürich is located in Zurich, Switzerland, and fosters an environment that inspires excellence and independent thinking. Join us to contribute to innovative research and solutions for global challenges in mineral physics and geophysics.
