About this position

A fully funded PhD studentship is available in the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham, focusing on the design and self-assembly of multifunctional advanced materials. The project leverages computational methods and data-driven approaches, including machine learning, to address challenges in programming colloidal self-assembly for the creation of porous or open 3D colloidal crystals. These crystals serve as platforms for advanced materials such as metamaterials, with customizable photonic, phononic, and mechanical properties, and can be fabricated at scale via self-assembly.

The research will explore efficient parameter space for optimal structure design, considering both thermodynamic and kinetic factors to ensure successful self-assembly into target crystal structures. The Chakrabarti group, led by Dr Dwaipayan Chakrabarti, operates at the interface of soft matter and advanced materials and maintains active collaborations within the UK and internationally, including with the International Institute for Sustainability with Knotted Chiral Meta Matter (WPI-SKCM2) at Hiroshima University.

Recent publications from the group highlight advances in programming colloidal self-assembly for open crystals and empty liquids, including work on topological transitions in network liquids, chiral photonic crystals, and hierarchical self-assembly pathways. The group’s research is recognized for its innovative use of computational and theoretical approaches in materials science.
