About this position

My lab is recruiting a PhD student interested in applying artificial intelligence (AI) in veterinary cytology and pathology. Veterinary pathologists/residents with a programming background are welcome to apply!

My lab is recruiting. Please spread the words! (?????,?????)

[PhD Opportunity in AI-Driven Pathology Image Analysis]

Dr. Candice Chu’s laboratory at Texas A&M University is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our team in advancing digital cytology and artificial intelligence for veterinary pathology. This position offers an exciting opportunity to develop novel AI algorithms for automated cell classification and whole-slide image diagnosis. The successful candidate will undertake a cutting-edge doctoral research project focused on applying deep learning to cytology (e.g. analyzing blood smears, fine-needle aspirates, and other cytological preparations) to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.

Anticipated Start Time
Fall 2026 or later

What We Offer
Stipend of $30,000 per year for 4 years with tuition coverage and benefits package.

Ideal Candidate

We welcome applications from individuals with a DVM, MD, or master’s degree (or demonstrated strong background) in computational science, biomedical engineering, data science, veterinary or human medical imaging, or related fields.

The ideal candidate should have:

- Familiarity with microscopic imaging or digital pathology is a plus. For candidates coming from a veterinary/medical background, any experience with research or projects in computational analysis will strengthen your application. For candidates from a computing background, some exposure to biomedical imaging or a willingness to learn the fundamentals of cytology/pathology is expected.

- Experience with deep learning, machine learning, and AI-based medical image analysis (e.g., convolutional neural networks, segmentation models).
Strong programming skills in Python and experience with deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, or similar).

- Knowledge of statistical analysis and correlation methods in clinical research (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, R).

- Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Excellent communication skills and proficiency in English (written and spoken).

Please only reach out if you are qualified.
