Postdoc in Future Aviation Concepts: Aircraft Design and Novel Propulsion Systems

This postdoctoral position at Chalmers University of Technology offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in future aviation concepts, focusing on aircraft design and novel propulsion systems. Based in the Division of Fluid Mechanics within the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences, you will join a vibrant research environment dedicated to advancing sustainable transport solutions. The division is renowned for its expertise in experimental and computational fluid dynamics, with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and a strong European network, including collaborations with major aircraft engine OEMs and top universities. The research group specializes in turbomachinery and aeroacoustics, investigating new propulsion concepts and aerothermal design of turbomachinery components. The EXAELIA project, central to this position, aims to develop future aircraft and propulsion technologies that support climate neutrality in aviation by 2050. The project integrates expertise from aircraft and engine design to operations, with the goal of creating a next-generation flight test platform for innovative technologies. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will lead research activities within a large EU project, collaborate with industry and academic partners across Europe, and supervise master’s and PhD students. The role emphasizes hydrogen-enabled propulsion concepts, multidisciplinary modelling, and numerical simulation tools such as Python, Matlab, and CFD. You will contribute to high-quality publications and support the development of junior researchers, while engaging in teaching opportunities at undergraduate and master’s levels. Chalmers University of Technology provides a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, Sweden, with comprehensive employee benefits, including generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender equality and offers Swedish language courses for international staff. The position is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required, and a valid residence permit must be presented at the start date. Applicants must hold a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field, with a strong research track record. Experience in aircraft design, propulsion systems, multidisciplinary modelling, and numerical methods is highly valued. The ideal candidate is collaborative, communicates clearly, and thrives in diverse teams. Applications should be submitted online, including a comprehensive CV, publication list, course transcripts, teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining research background and future goals. The deadline for applications is March 4, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Carlos Xisto at [email protected]. Join Chalmers and help shape the future of sustainable aviation!
