Doctoral student in Additive Manufacturing of Non-Weldable Ni-Based Superalloys
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Additive Manufacturing (AM) of non-weldable Ni-based superalloys. This opportunity is part of the national competence centre CAM2 (Centre for Additive Manufacturing - Metal), hosted by the Division of Materials and Manufacture at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. CAM2 is a leading hub for material and process development in powder-based metal AM, offering extensive collaboration between academia and industry.
The research project focuses on advancing powder-bed fusion laser beam (PBF-LB) processing, including innovative laser-shaping technologies, to fabricate defect-free, high-γ’ volume fraction Ni-based superalloys. The work will also develop integrated hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and heat-treatment strategies to optimize manufacturing time, cost, and material properties. The ultimate goal is to enable hydrogen-capable gas turbines for future carbon-free power generation, contributing to sustainable industrial solutions.
As a doctoral student, you will join one of Europe's largest AM research groups, working alongside senior researchers, postdocs, and fellow PhD students in a collaborative and supportive environment. The position offers unique opportunities to develop expertise in advanced manufacturing, materials science, and process engineering, with strong ties to industry and real-world impact. You will also participate in advanced courses within the Graduate School of Industrial and Materials Science and may engage in teaching or other departmental duties (up to 20% of working hours).
Eligibility requires a Master's degree (120 credits) or Magisterexamen (60 credits) in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics, or production engineering. International applicants with a 4-year Bachelor's degree are also considered. Strong English communication skills, analytical ability, and research potential are essential. Experience in metal AM, metallic materials, materials characterisation, CAD, powder-bed fusion technology, and microscopy is highly valued.
The position is fully funded, with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), and includes all employee benefits. The contract is for four years, extendable to five years with teaching duties. Doctoral studies require physical presence in Gothenburg, Sweden, and a valid residence permit by the start date.
