PhD and Postdoc Positions in Polymer Chemistry and Materials Science at Empa, Switzerland

Empa, a leading Swiss research institution in the ETH Domain, is offering PhD and postdoctoral positions in the field of organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, sol–gel chemistry, and materials science. The Laboratory for Building Energy Materials and Components focuses on developing advanced, low eco-impact porous materials for insulation, sorption, and energy-related applications. The research project centers on polyimide aerogels and related porous polymer systems, aiming to advance the understanding of structure formation in porous polymers and to design new materials with tailored properties. The PhD position is primarily intended for candidates with a strong background in organic and/or polymer chemistry and a keen interest in porous polymer materials. Outstanding postdoctoral applicants with an exceptional fit to the project scope may also be considered. The research involves elucidating polymerization pathways, understanding polymer–solvent interactions, designing new monomers and polymer architectures, and establishing structure–property relationships in aerogels. The project is fundamental in nature but embedded in an industry-sponsored framework, providing resources and clear pathways toward innovation and industrial application. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, sol–gel chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field for the PhD position, or a PhD for postdoctoral applicants. Experience with organic synthesis, polymer–solvent interactions, gelation, or porous materials is highly advantageous. Familiarity with materials characterization techniques and basic knowledge of molecular simulation or modelling are beneficial. Excellent English communication skills are required; German is a plus. Empa offers a stimulating, international, and collaborative research environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure and attractive employment conditions. The PhD position is for 3 years (60–100% employment), and the postdoctoral position is for 2 years. The start date is May 2026 or upon agreement. Applications must be submitted online via the Empa job portal, including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons. For further information, contact Dr. Shanyu Zhao, Group Leader, Building Energy Materials and Components.
