Postdoc Positions in Energy System and Industry Transformation Modelling at IT:U (Energy Transition, Computational Modelling, Policy)

Two postdoctoral positions are open in the Energy Transition and Climate Futures research group at Interdisciplinary Transformation University Austria (IT:U), located in Linz, Austria. The group, led by Professor Falko Ueckerdt, focuses on computational modelling and policy-relevant research addressing the energy transition, industry transformation, hydrogen, electrification, climate-friendly materials, and the circular economy. The research is highly interdisciplinary, combining environmental science, computer science, economics, and physics to explore how energy systems and heavy industries can transform towards sustainability. Successful candidates will join a dynamic and growing team, collaborating closely with leading institutions such as the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, Technical University Berlin, University of Oxford, Monash University, and Tsinghua University. The postdocs will contribute to collaborative code development, data analysis, high-impact scientific publishing, supervision of junior researchers, and engagement with stakeholders from industry and policy. The group values diversity and encourages applications from women and non-binary candidates. Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, data science, applied mathematics, physics, economics, engineering, environmental/climate/energy science) and have demonstrated programming experience (preferably Python or R). Experience with computational modelling, research software development, collaborative code development (using Git), energy systems analysis, scenario modelling, or material flow analysis is advantageous. Strong analytical skills and excellent English communication (C1) are required. The position offers a competitive salary (from €67,000 gross per year), up to 4 years of full-time employment, access to high-performance computing, flexible working hours, and opportunities for international collaboration and research stays abroad. To apply, candidates should submit an online application via the IT:U job portal, including a CV (with grades and programming experience), cover letter, PhD certificate, transcripts, and 2-3 references. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled. For further information, contact Professor Falko Ueckerdt at [email protected].
