PhD Position in Composite Membranes for Gas Separations (Chemistry/Materials Science)
Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, Hyderabad Campus (BITS-Pilani Hyderabad) and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Hyderabad (TIFR Hyderabad) are jointly offering a PhD position in the field of composite membranes for gas separations. The project focuses on the development of advanced composite membranes for the separation of industrially relevant gases and vapors, including hydrocarbons, CO₂, and H₂. The research will be conducted under the joint supervision of Prof. Himanshu Aggarwal (BITS Hyderabad, Chemistry) and Prof. Ritesh Haldar (TIFR Hyderabad).
The successful candidate will work on the synthesis and characterization of novel porous fillers such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and molecular cages. The project also involves polymer design, membrane fabrication, and comprehensive testing and performance evaluation for chemical separations. The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art facilities at both institutions, gaining expertise in porous materials design and membrane technology—key skills for cutting-edge research in sustainable separations.
Eligibility:
Applicants must hold a master's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related subject with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent CGPA. A valid CSIR/UGC-NET score, INSPIRE fellowship, or other recognized fellowship is required. Prior experience in MOF/COF synthesis and characterization is highly desirable. Candidates passionate about porous materials and sustainable technology are strongly encouraged to apply.
Application Process:
Interested candidates should email a detailed CV and a half-page research statement to both supervisors by March 10, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews. The PhD degree will be awarded by BITS-Pilani, and the candidate will work across both BITS-Pilani Hyderabad and TIFR Hyderabad labs.
