PhD in AI-based Musculoskeletal Image Analysis for Osteoarthritis at Erasmus MC

Erasmus MC in Rotterdam is seeking a PhD student to join a cutting-edge research project focused on developing and applying AI-based image analysis methods for the assessment of osteoarthritis using musculoskeletal imaging data, including MRI and plain radiographs. The successful candidate will work on the development of advanced algorithms for automated disease severity assessment and imaging biomarker extraction, with a particular emphasis on federated learning approaches to improve disease prediction and treatment insights. The project aims to evaluate imaging biomarkers from MRI and radiography as predictive, clustering, and surrogate markers for disease progression and treatment outcomes in osteoarthritis. As a PhD student, you will extract semi-quantitative and quantitative image features from multiple imaging cohorts, contributing to improved understanding, stratification, and monitoring of osteoarthritis. You will be embedded in the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, working closely with the BIGR and ADMIRE research groups, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of imaging scientists, AI researchers, and clinicians. The environment is international, collaborative, and supportive, with opportunities to work with both local and international partners. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in computer science, biomedical engineering, mathematics, or a related field, and be familiar with programming (e.g., Python). Good scientific writing and presentation skills in English, basic knowledge in medical imaging and AI, and an affinity for imaging analysis and AI for medical applications, especially musculoskeletal disorders, are required. The position is fully funded for 4 years, with a gross monthly salary starting at €3,108 and increasing to €3,939, plus excellent fringe benefits such as a 13th month salary, travel expense package, pension insurance, and access to facilities like a gym and physiotherapist. The application deadline is December 31, 2025. To apply, submit your resume, motivation letter, and a list of courses and grades from your MSc studies via the Erasmus MC vacancy portal. For more information, you may contact Assistant Professor Jukka Hirvasniemi. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in AI, medical imaging, and translational research in a world-class academic hospital.
