PhD student for Information Field Theory and Ptychography

This PhD position at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY in Hamburg focuses on the application of information field theory to coherent phase contrast imaging, with a particular emphasis on ptychography at synchrotron facilities. Ptychography is a cutting-edge super resolution phase retrieval imaging technique, capable of achieving resolutions down to single-digit nanometres. The project aims to leverage the emerging framework of information field theory to theoretically evaluate the impact of experimental parameters such as degree of coherence, photon flux, and probe shape on ptychographic image quality. The research will involve both theoretical modeling and practical validation through experiments conducted at the P06 beamline at the Petra III Synchrotron facility. The successful candidate will be expected to apply information field theory to assess and optimize experimental parameters, perform hands-on experiments at synchrotron beamlines, and investigate the quantification of information in ptychography data. DESY offers a vibrant international research environment, with interdisciplinary platforms and strong support for career development, health management, and work-life balance. The position is funded, with a monthly salary at 67% of the remuneration group 13 TVöD, and includes a financial supplement for a German job ticket. Applicants must have a Master's degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, strong mathematical skills, programming experience (Python, C++, CUDA), and knowledge of information theory. The position is open to candidates who meet the doctoral admission requirements of the University of Hamburg, as DESY collaborates with the university for doctoral degrees. Applications from women and severely disabled persons are strongly encouraged. The application deadline is November 27, 2025, and candidates should submit all required documents via the DESY application portal.

PhD Student in Information Field Theory and Ptychography

DESY, one of the world's leading research centers located in Hamburg, Germany, is seeking a motivated PhD student to join a project focused on applying information field theory to coherent phase contrast imaging, with a particular emphasis on ptychography at synchrotrons. Ptychography is a cutting-edge super resolution phase retrieval imaging technique capable of achieving resolutions down to single-digit nanometres. The project aims to leverage the emerging framework of information field theory to theoretically evaluate the impact of experimental parameters such as degree of coherence, photon flux, and probe shape on ptychographic image quality. The research will also involve optimizing these parameters to improve image quality, with theoretical findings validated through experiments conducted at the P06 beamline at the Petra III Synchrotron facility. The successful candidate will apply information field theory to assess experimental impacts, perform hands-on experiments at synchrotron beamlines, and investigate the quantification of information in ptychography data. Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, possess strong mathematical skills, have experience with programming (Python, C++, CUDA), and demonstrate knowledge of information theory. The position offers a unique international research environment, flexible working hours, family-friendly policies, health management, occupational pension provision, and a secure workplace with comprehensive training and development opportunities. PhD students receive a monthly salary of 67% of the payment of the remuneration group 13 TVöD (Federal Government), with additional financial support for a German job ticket. DESY collaborates with the University of Hamburg for doctoral degrees, and candidates must meet the university's admission requirements. Applications from women and severely disabled persons are strongly encouraged. The application deadline is November 27, 2025.
