Fully Funded MS Graduate Research Assistantships in Environmental Science (Microclimate Modeling, Urban ET) at University of Illinois Springfield
Two fully funded Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) are available for students interested in pursuing a thesis-based MS in Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS), starting Fall 2026. These positions are ideal for undergraduates with a strong interest in environmental science, microclimate modeling, urban evapotranspiration (ET), remote sensing, ecohydrology, and water resource management. The research group, led by Dr. Kyle Blount (Assistant Professor, School of Integrated Sciences, Sustainability, and Public Health), focuses on the interactions between hydrology, ecology, and society, with current projects examining urban microclimate modeling, urban heat, water, and vegetation interactions, and sustainable urban development.
GRA #1 is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for two years and involves field work, site maintenance, data downloads/maintenance, and data analysis. Depending on the student's interests and skills, the project may also include remote sensing and microclimate modeling. GRA #2 is supported by an internal research fellowship, also covering stipend and tuition, and offers flexibility to design a related thesis project, ideally focused on microclimate modeling or urban ET field work. Both positions provide comprehensive financial support, including stipend and tuition coverage.
Applicants should have a background in environmental science, hydrology, ecology, or related fields, and demonstrate interest or experience in field work, data analysis, remote sensing, or microclimate modeling. The application process requires submission to the UIS MS Program in Environmental Sciences, indicating interest in GA/GRA positions, completion of a questionnaire, and provision of three references. The priority deadline to be considered for the eligible pool is March 15, 2026, with a possible second round in May/June if positions remain unfilled.
