PhD in Computational Methods (AI Models) for Medical Image Analysis: Generative Models, Large Vision-Language Models, Multimodal Learning, and Foundation Models
Are you passionate about advancing artificial intelligence in healthcare? The University of Birmingham's School of Computer Science invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on developing computational methods and AI models for medical image analysis. This project explores the transformative potential of generative models, large vision-language models, multimodal learning, and foundation models to address complex challenges in medical imaging.
As a PhD student, you will join a dynamic research team dedicated to creating robust and adaptive AI algorithms capable of providing accurate diagnoses, personalized treatment plans, and improved patient outcomes. The research aims to bridge domain and knowledge gaps across diverse medical scenarios, leveraging state-of-the-art machine learning techniques. Depending on your background and interests, you may specialize in developing reliable machine learning models using foundation models, generative techniques, or multimodal learning approaches.
The project is supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Le Zhang, an expert in AI for healthcare. You will have the opportunity to contribute to high-impact research, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and publish in leading journals and conferences. The research areas include artificial intelligence, computer vision, data science, machine learning, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, robotics, cardiology, neurology, and radiology.
Funding:
The position offers a 4-year studentship covering UK home fees or international student fees, providing financial support throughout your doctoral studies.
Eligibility:
Applicants should have a good first degree in computer science, statistics, physics, engineering, or a related field. Experience with AI for healthcare projects using PyTorch and/or TensorFlow is expected. Strong programming skills (Python, C++, C, Java), excellent communication abilities, and a track record of scientific presentations or publications are preferred. English language requirements must be met as specified by the University of Birmingham.
