PhD Position in Rhizosphere Processes and Plant-Soil Interactions (Soil Science, Biogeochemistry, Agriculture)

The University of Tuebingen, in collaboration with the Division of Genetics and Physiology of Root Development of the IPK Gatersleben, the Institute of Grassland Sciences of the University of Goettingen, and the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST, Kenya), is offering a 4-year PhD position focused on rhizosphere processes and plant-soil interactions. This opportunity is funded by a KAAD scholarship for East African scholars, with final funding approval to be announced in December 2025. The research project, entitled "Impact of concurrent abiotic & biotic stress on below-ground processes at the root-soil interface," will contribute to the DFG Research Unit MultiStress. The candidate will experimentally assess the combined effects of drought, nitrogen deficiency, foliar disease (Setosphaeria turcica), and insect pest stressors on maize roots and their interactions with soil. The work involves field experiments in Germany (Göttingen) and Kenya (Siaya), root and soil sampling, assessment of key root traits, application of stable isotopes, and linkage of phenotypic data with transcript profiles. Collaboration with other PhD students and scientific publication are expected. Applicants should hold a master's degree in soil science, agriculture, biogeochemistry, geoecology, molecular biology, microbiology, biology, geoscience, or a related field. Strong scientific writing skills in English, a basic understanding of soil processes, and experience with molecular or biogeochemical laboratory techniques are required. Teamwork in laboratory and field settings is essential.
