Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell Manufacturing and Characterization
Tampere University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position focused on the manufacturing and characterization of Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOECs). The successful candidate will join the Renewable Energy Technologies research group, led by Professor (Associate) Muhammad Imran Asghar, which is dedicated to advancing renewable energy technologies for improved performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness. The group specializes in electrochemistry and materials science, with research areas including green hydrogen production, energy storage solutions, and advanced energy conversion technologies.
This postdoctoral position is part of the Horizon Europe JU RIA Project “ThunderStack: Boosting Efficiency and Lifetime in Solid Oxide Planar Electrolysers through BoP Integration,” coordinated by Tampere University. The appointed researcher will contribute to SOEC manufacturing technologies and support project coordination, collaborating with international consortium partners. The research environment offers expertise in material synthesis (co-precipitation, Pechini method), material characterization (HT-XRD, HR-TEM, 3D tomography, Raman, FTIR, TGA, DSC, AFM, mechanical testing), cell manufacturing (tape casting, screen printing, 3D and inkjet printing), and electrochemical characterization (EIS, DC methods, cyclic voltammetry).
Responsibilities will be tailored to the candidate’s expertise and the needs of the group, with opportunities for international collaboration and scientific impact. The position is offered for one year, with the possibility of a three-year extension. The starting date is preferably January 1, 2026, or as mutually agreed. A six-month trial period applies. The salary is based on the Finnish university salary system (level 5-6) and personal performance, with a typical gross salary of 3900 euros per month. Additional benefits include occupational health care, flexible work schedule, access to modern research infrastructure, and a personal fund for sports and cultural activities.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field (materials science, mechanical engineering, physics, or chemistry) and possess strong experimental skills in SOEC/fuel cell manufacturing and characterization. Good English communication skills, independence, motivation, initiative, and creativity are required. Applications should be submitted online, including a CV, list of publications, and a motivation letter. Tampere University offers a dynamic, international research environment in Finland’s largest inland city, known for its vibrant academic and cultural scene and high quality of life.
