PhD in Governance of Migration Temporalities – Migration, Urban Inequality, and Policy Studies

PhD Opportunity: Governance of Migration Temporalities at Erasmus University Rotterdam Erasmus University Rotterdam, in partnership with the University of Deusto, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on the governance of migration temporalities, urban inequality, and policy studies. This position is part of the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network “MITIME: Migration and Time in Post-industrial Urban Europe.” Research Focus: The project investigates how the complex temporalities of migration in urban contexts interact with migration and inclusion policies. It explores how assumptions about migrants’ intended duration of stay challenge existing policies, focusing on cities like Rotterdam and Bilbao. The research will analyze temporality considerations in local and national policies for various migrant categories (intra-EU, asylum seekers, highly skilled, digital nomads, students) and how these interact with lived realities, affecting access to rights and services. The project aims to contribute to literature on migration complexity, the mobility turn, and governance studies. The position includes a three-month secondment at the University of Deusto in Bilbao and participation in all MITIME network-wide training and mobility activities, alongside 14 other PhD candidates across seven partner universities in Europe. Eligibility and Requirements: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field (governance studies, migration studies, public administration, political sociology, or policy studies) and must not have resided or conducted their main activity in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to the start date (1 September 2026), in accordance with MSCA-DN mobility rules. Candidates must not have previously completed or defended a PhD and must demonstrate proficiency in English. Knowledge of Dutch and Spanish is advantageous. Applicants should have strong analytical, critical thinking, and academic writing skills, experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research, and a commitment to interdisciplinary, collaborative research. Willingness for international mobility and participation in network activities is expected. A record of scholarly publications is an advantage. Funding and Benefits: The position is fully funded for four years, with a salary ranging from €3,059 to €3,881 gross per month (full-time, 38 hours/week). Additional benefits include 41 days of paid leave, 8% holiday pay, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, pension contributions, relocation support, and professional development opportunities. The contract is initially for one year, extendable for three more years upon satisfactory performance. The position is based at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB), Campus Woudestein, Rotterdam.
