Fully Funded MSc and PhD Research Stay in Solvation Science (Catalysis, Chemistry) at Ruhr University Bochum

The RESOLV Student Challenge offers current MSc and PhD students in Natural Sciences, Medical Sciences, or related Engineering fields the opportunity to win a fully funded 3-month research stay at the Goossen group, Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. The group specializes in solvation science, with a focus on developing innovative catalytic reactions as alternatives to complex and hazardous multistep processes. Research areas include organic and inorganic chemistry, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry, photochemistry, and the design of novel catalysts and reactors. The group also integrates mechanistic investigations and quantum mechanical calculations to support experimental work, with applications in pharmaceutical synthesis and sustainable chemistry. Applicants should have coursework or research experience in organic and inorganic chemistry, with additional experience in homogeneous catalysis considered advantageous. Proficiency in synthesis, purification, and characterization techniques (such as NMR, IR, MS), strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication skills in English and/or German are required. High motivation is essential. The program provides a monthly stipend and travel reimbursement for the duration of the 3-month research stay. The research will be conducted at Ruhr University Bochum and local RESOLV partner institutions, with English as the language of instruction. The application deadline is March 1, 2026, and the research stay must be completed before December 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview. To apply, candidates must submit a 1-page research proposal, CV (maximum 2 pages), motivation letter, diploma, and transcript. Applicants must organize an interview with Prof. Gooßen before submitting their application. Applications should be sent to [email protected]. For more information, visit the RESOLV Student Challenge website.
