PhD Position in Cardiovascular Science: Vascular and Lymphatic Complications in Fontan Circulation

KU Leuven’s Department of Cardiovascular Sciences is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position focused on vascular and lymphatic complications in Fontan circulation. The project aims to advance understanding of complications arising in patients with failing Fontan circulation, a critical procedure for individuals born with a single functional heart chamber. The research will involve analyzing clinical data and lymphatic changes in patients, conducting translational research using a large-scale sheep model, and applying advanced imaging techniques such as MRI, echocardiography, and histology. The successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including experts in pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, vascular biology, and lymphatic research. The goal of the project is to develop detailed insights into vascular and lymphatic changes, ultimately improving diagnosis, management, and patient outcomes for those with congenital heart defects. The position offers integration into the European research network, access to state-of-the-art clinical and research facilities, and opportunities for skill development, research innovation, and participation in international conferences. Career support for young international scientists is also provided. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Medicine or a related discipline, possess a creative and analytical mindset, and have a strong interest in cardiovascular research, particularly MRI imaging of congenital heart defects. Excellent English communication skills are required, and knowledge of Dutch is a plus. Candidates should be able to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrate flexibility and precision, and be motivated to work with both animal models and patient data. Additional responsibilities include contributing to research proposals and supervising master students. To apply, candidates should submit their application online via the KU Leuven application portal by 30 April 2026. For academic enquiries, contact Prof. Ruth Heying or Prof. Sarah Thomis. This opportunity is ideal for those seeking to advance their career in cardiovascular translational research and make a meaningful impact on clinical outcomes for patients with congenital heart defects.
