Materials Engineer or Postdoctoral Researcher in Aerogels and Composites at Empa
Empa, a leading Swiss research institution in the ETH Domain, is seeking a highly motivated Materials Engineer or Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Laboratory for Building Energy Materials and Components in Zurich. The position focuses on the development and optimization of aerogels and aerogel-based composites for advanced insulation, sorption, and energy-related applications. The research group, led by Shanyu Zhao and Dr. Wim Malfait, specializes in fundamental materials chemistry, process–structure–property relationships, and application-driven R&D, collaborating closely with both academic and industrial partners.
The innovation project leverages Empa’s extensive expertise in silica aerogels, aerogel composites, and product development, aiming to develop high-performance materials and systems, particularly silica aerogel composites. Key objectives include understanding how synthesis routes and aerogel properties affect composite performance, optimizing thermal and mechanical properties, scaling up production processes, and integrating aerogel composites into larger systems in collaboration with industry partners.
Responsibilities include coordinating project activities, supervising intern students, designing and executing synthesis strategies, conducting systematic parameter studies, characterizing materials, analyzing experimental data, and contributing to patent applications. Up to 20% of the role may involve leading adjacent scientific research lines and publishing results.
Applicants should hold a doctoral or master's degree in materials engineering, sol-gel chemistry, or a closely related field, with hands-on experience in (silica) aerogel synthesis and/or aerogel composites. Experience with scale-up, industry, adhesives, bonding optimization, and porous materials characterization (e.g., nitrogen sorption, SEM, TEM, TGA, FTIR, NMR, thermal conductivity) is beneficial but not required. Excellent English communication skills are essential.
Empa offers a stimulating, international, and collaborative environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, attractive employment conditions, and excellent opportunities for professional and personal development. The position is for 2 years, starting May 2026 or upon agreement. Applications must be submitted online via the Empa job portal, including a motivation letter, CV, certificates, diplomas, and two references. For further information, contact Dr. Wim Malfait, Head of Laboratory.
