Quantum Reservoir Computing via Nano-Opto-Electro-Mechanical (NOEM) Coupled Quantum Oscillators

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering, focuses on developing a novel hardware platform for Quantum Reservoir Computing using Nano-Opto-Electro-Mechanical (NOEM) coupled quantum oscillators. The research aims to advance quantum neural networks, leveraging quantum information as data for machine learning algorithms. Candidates can pursue either a modelling approach, suitable for those with a Computer Science background, or a device fabrication route, ideal for Physics or Electronic Engineering students. The modelling path involves developing mathematical or numerical models of NOEM-based quantum reservoir computing, while the experimental route seeks to fabricate NOEM-coupled oscillators capable of operating in the quantum regime. The project offers substantial training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills, preparing students for careers in quantum technology. Funding is competitive, with UK students eligible for a 4-year UKRI TechExpert tax-free stipend of approximately £31,000 per year, and studentships at the UKRI base rate available for EU, Horizon Europe, and International students. Overseas applicants with external funding are also encouraged to apply. Entry requirements include an undergraduate degree with at least UK 2:1 honours or international equivalent, and applications must include a CV, two academic references, degree transcripts/certificates, and English language qualification if applicable. The university supports equality, diversity, and inclusivity, considers personal circumstances, and offers part-time study options. The application deadline is 31 July 2026, with an earlier deadline of 31 March 2026 for international applicants. For further information, candidates are encouraged to contact the supervisors, Dr Yoshishige Tsuchiya and Dr Srinandan Dasmahapatra.
