PhD Student in Electrochemical Degradation of Water Pollutants

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland's largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the Electrocatalysis and Interface group within the Electrochemistry Laboratory. This project focuses on the electrochemical degradation of water pollutants, specifically targeting the mechanisms of electrochemical oxidation processes (EOP) for the removal of emerging contaminants via the generation of hydroxyl radicals. The research aims to develop next-generation electrocatalysts for water purification, contributing to sustainable solutions for environmental challenges. As a PhD student, you will investigate reaction intermediates and products using a range of advanced analytical chemistry techniques. The project involves the use of synchrotron-based methods to characterize materials under operating conditions, establishing design principles for innovative EOP electrocatalysts. You will collaborate closely with colleagues in the electrochemistry department, the Swiss Light Source, and international partners, benefiting from PSI's interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment. The position is supervised by Professor T. J. Schmidt, with additional contact provided by PD Dr Emiliana Fabbri. You will be registered as a PhD student at ETH Zürich, gaining access to world-class training and development opportunities. The role offers systematic on-the-job training, personal development possibilities, and modern employment conditions that support work-life balance. Applicants must have a completed Master’s degree in physical chemistry, chemical physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field, with demonstrated interest or experience in electrochemistry and spectroscopy. Strong experimental skills, initiative, and the ability to work independently in a collaborative, interdisciplinary team are essential. Proficiency in English communication and writing is required. The position is fully funded according to Swiss standards. Applications must be submitted online by 18 April 2026, including addresses of referees. For further information, contact PD Dr Emiliana Fabbri at [email protected]. The Paul Scherrer Institute is committed to training future generations of scientists and offers an inclusive, innovative research environment.
