English: Collaborative Research Center 1278 PolyTarget – Polymer-Based Nanoparticle Libraries for Targeted Anti-Inflammatory Strategies
The Collaborative Research Center 1278 PolyTarget at Friedrich Schiller University Jena offers a PhD programme focused on the development of polymer-based nanoparticle libraries for targeted anti-inflammatory strategies. The project aims to design and optimise pharmacologically active nanoparticles using functional synthetic polymers and modified biopolymers, addressing fundamental questions in targeted nanomedicine. Doctoral candidates will investigate structure-property relationships through detailed molecular and morphological characterisation, with the goal of improving biological and pharmaceutical functions of the nanoparticles. The integrated Research Training Group (RTG) provides a comprehensive training environment, including method courses, scientific colloquia, PhD seminars, CRC retreats, mentoring for female PhD students, research stays abroad, and soft skill courses. The programme is designed to be completed in three years and is conducted in English. International elements include guest lecturers and opportunities for research stays abroad. While there are no tuition fees, students pay a semester contribution of approximately 290 EUR. Funding opportunities are available through the university's Graduate Academy, which also offers career counselling and support services for international students. Applicants should have a Master's degree in chemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology, or related fields, and be fluent in English. Applications are accepted at any time, with details and current announcements available on the PolyTarget website. The university provides accommodation options for international doctoral candidates and offers a range of support services, including a welcome event, buddy programme, tutors, specialist counselling, and assistance with visa matters. The research is conducted in cooperation with several institutes, including the DFG, Universitätsklinikum Jena, JCSM, Leibniz-Institut für Altersforschung, HKI, and Leibniz IPHT. For more information and to apply, candidates should contact the Laboratory of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry (IOMC) CRC 1278 PolyTarget at Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
