The Department of Mathematics at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the Eberly College of Science beginning August 2026. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor John Harlim, in collaboration with Yan Li from the Electrical Engineering department and Daning Huang from the Aerospace Engineering department. The research focus is on scientific machine learning, specifically the development of computationally efficient reduced-order dynamical systems on graphs, with modern power grid systems as a primary application. This interdisciplinary project bridges mathematics, machine learning, and engineering, aiming to advance the modeling and analysis of complex networked systems such as power grids. Applicants should have recently completed a Ph.D. and demonstrate exceptional research potential. A strong background in scientific machine learning, numerical analysis, and dynamical systems is required, and preference will be given to candidates with proficiency in graph neural networks and related scientific machine learning tools. Teaching duties may be assigned as part of the appointment. The position offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees. To apply, candidates must complete both the Penn State application and a submission through Mathjobs.org, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching and research statements, publication list, and at least three reference letters (one of which must address teaching abilities). Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks. Penn State is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and encourages applications from all qualified individuals. For more information and to apply, visit Mathjobs.org.
