PhD Researcher in Generative AI for Medical Imaging (MRI Hallucination Detection)

Ghent University is seeking a motivated PhD researcher to join the Faculty of Sciences, Department of Mathematics, Informatics, and Statistics (WE02), for a project focused on generative AI in medical imaging. The research will center on developing methods to detect 'hallucinations' in generative AI models used for MRI reconstruction, a critical challenge in ensuring the reliability of medical imaging technologies. The successful candidate will collaborate with specialists from the Ghent Institute for Functional and Metabolic Imaging (GIfMI), with opportunities to validate developed methods on real MRI scanners. At least 90% of the assignment will be dedicated to academic research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation. The role also includes supporting departmental teaching activities, assisting in selected courses, and potentially (co-)supervising master's theses. The position is full-time, with a contract of indefinite duration and a maximum term of four years, offering a competitive salary according to wage scale WM1 and a comprehensive benefits package including training opportunities, 36 days of annual leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. Applicants must hold a master's degree in computer science or (bio-)engineering sciences, with a strong background in machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision. Experience with Python and relevant technologies (PyTorch, NumPy, Pandas, HDF5) as well as high-performance computing systems is required. Candidates with foreign diplomas in languages other than Dutch, French, German, or English must provide a translation. Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, encouraging all qualified candidates to apply. The application process is strictly online via the university's e-recruitment system. Required documents include a CV and academic transcript (merged PDF), cover letter, diploma transcript, and additional materials such as reference letters. Applications sent by email will not be considered. For further information about the vacancy, contact Prof. Yvan Saeys at [email protected]. For questions about the application process, consult the FAQ or email [email protected]. The application deadline is April 1, 2026, at 23:59 Brussels time. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in advancing AI for medical imaging within a leading European research environment.
