About this position

The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship in the field of electro-organic synthesis at metal-oxide nanoparticle catalysts within the Applied Electrochemistry and Catalysis (ELCAT) research group, Faculty of Applied Engineering. This research is pivotal for advancing sustainable chemical industry practices by converting renewable electricity into chemical energy carriers and value-added compounds. The successful candidate will focus on the synthesis and characterization of electrode surface-immobilized metal oxide nanoparticles, evaluation of electro-hydrogenation performance for various organic substrates, and mechanistic investigation using spectroscopy.

The project aims to optimize catalyst materials and reaction conditions, integrating process engineering and electrolyzer design to maximize conversion performance. ELCAT provides a vibrant research environment with over 40 researchers and state-of-the-art facilities, engaging in topics such as CO2 reduction, water splitting electrolysis, electrochemical reactor design, redox flow batteries, and electrolyzer scale-up for green industry applications. The doctoral project will address challenges in direct electro-hydrogenation using water, aiming to prevent undesired hydrogen evolution and achieve selective e-hydrogenation of complex substrates.

The research will employ catalyst design, flow electrolyzer engineering, and advanced spectroscopy to develop a versatile platform for energy storage in liquid organic hydrogen carriers, industrial alkyne semi-hydrogenation, and bio-feedstock upgrading. Responsibilities include developing nanoparticle-functionalized electrodes, screening reaction conditions, analyzing electrolysis products, and designing custom electrolyzer setups for in operando catalyst monitoring.

The candidate will publish scientific articles or patents and contribute to teaching and research support within the faculty. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, or a related field, with excellent academic results. Desirable skills include nanoparticle synthesis, characterization, heterogeneous catalysis, flow reactor engineering, and fluid dynamics. Proficiency in English and laboratory safety is required.

The scholarship is initially for one year, renewable up to four years, with a monthly stipend and additional allowances for eco, internet, and commuting. The position is based at Campus Drie Eiken in Antwerp.
