About this position

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in the field of in vitro gametogenesis within the context of fertility preservation. This position is based in the Department of Veterinary Sciences, Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences, and is part of the innovative 'Stem4Biodiversity' project. The research aims to generate and bank primordial germ cell-like cells from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) at room temperature, contributing to biodiversity conservation and addressing the challenges of the 'sixth extinction.'

The project focuses on overcoming limitations in assisted reproductive technology and cryobanking, particularly the scarcity and preservation of oocytes in mammalian species. By leveraging stem cell technologies and domestic animal models, the research seeks to develop protocols that can be applied to endangered species, facilitating genetic diversity preservation and wildlife population management. The work will involve wet lab experiments, literature reviews, scientific writing, and participation in conferences. Additional responsibilities include limited teaching and research support in veterinary physiology and biochemistry, as well as stable duties at the Camelid Immunisation Facility.

Applicants must hold or expect to obtain a Master's degree in life sciences (biomedical, biotechnological, biology, veterinary or pharmaceutical sciences) by the start date. Essential skills include experience in (stem) cell handling and culture, molecular techniques, willingness to work with animal models, proficiency with relevant software, flexibility, teamwork, self-motivation, excellent English communication, attention to detail, and a valid driving license for Belgium. A FELASA certificate (or willingness to obtain it) and an international mindset are required. Desired skills include micromanipulation, (micro)dissection, iPSC handling, flow cytometry, cell imaging, assisted reproductive techniques, publication/presentation experience, grant writing, and Dutch language (a plus).

The scholarship is offered for 2 years, renewable for up to 2 additional years after positive evaluation. The monthly amount is based on university pay scales for Contract Research Staff (BAP), with additional benefits such as ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and commuting support. The planned start date is 1 June 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is located at Campus Drie Eiken, Wilrijk, Belgium, in a dynamic and supportive environment.
