The Kate Clinch Karenia Scholarship at the University of Technology Sydney offers an outstanding PhD opportunity for candidates interested in marine biology, ecology, genetics, and physiology, with a focus on harmful algal bloom species. The research centers on Karenia cristata, a species implicated in a major South Australian algal bloom that devastated marine life across a vast area. The project aims to advance knowledge in early warning systems, environmental monitoring, and mitigation strategies to protect marine ecosystems, fisheries, and human health from harmful algal blooms, especially under changing ocean conditions.

Successful candidates will be trained in a range of research techniques, including DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, and microalgal culturing. The project is based in the Faculty of Science at UTS and supervised by Professor S Murray. Applicants must be domestic students (Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens) and hold a UTS recognised degree: MSc Research or MSc Coursework with a research thesis of at least 6 months, or a Bachelor Honours degree with 1st Class, 2nd Class Division 1, or equivalent. Previous research experience in microbial ecology, genetics, marine biology, or a related field is required, along with excellent teamwork, communication, and laboratory skills.
