We are hiring a PhD student at the University of Groningen, to work in southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania on the project "Climate resilience in Africa: the role of ownership rights". The study will assess how promoting gender-inclusive ownership structures impact climate resilience in Maasai communities in Kenya and northern Tanzania. And it will explore how the shift from communal to private land management affects climate resilience. The position comes with a full salary plus research costs for a period of 4 years.
Successful candidates speak at least good English and Swahili, and preferably also Maasai.

Funding details

The position is fully funded for 4 years, with a gross monthly salary starting at €2,901 and increasing to a maximum of €3,707. Additional benefits include an 8% holiday allowance in May and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus in December. Research costs are covered. The appointment is full-time and temporary, with a positive assessment required after the first year. PhD candidates contribute 20% of their time to teaching in years 2-4.

What's required

Applicants must have a Master's degree (MSc or Research Master) in Economics, Development Studies, or a related field, with strong research skills and good academic results. Fluency in English and Swahili is required, and knowledge of Maasai is preferred. Experience with economic, gender, and inequality studies in Africa is expected. Candidates should be ambitious, highly motivated, and interested in a research career.
