Are you curious about the deepest parts of our planet and how they interact with human-made chemicals? We are looking for a PhD student to join the Contaminant Chemistry Unit in the project:
“Small but efficient – can hadal sediment microbes degrade persistent chemicals? (Hadal-Degrade)”
In this project, you will investigate contaminants in sediments from the world’s deepest ocean trenches (6–11 km below the surface) using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry. You will explore how microbial communities in hadal zones may break down pollutants and contribute to fundamental knowledge about contaminant cycling—and potentially to sustainable bioremediation solutions on Earth.

Applicants should have a strong background in natural sciences (chemistry, biology, earth sciences, physics, or meteorology). Experience with chromatography, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and trace analysis of environmental contaminants is a merit.

What's required
Applicants must have completed a second-cycle degree or equivalent (at least 240 higher education credits, with 60 credits in the second cycle). At least 45 credits at the second cycle must be in natural sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics, or Meteorology), including a 30-credit thesis project. An additional 30 credits in other natural science subjects are required. Documented knowledge in a relevant field, analytical and creative thinking, initiative, independence, collaboration skills, and proficiency in written and oral English are required. Experience in chromatography, high-resolution mass spectrometry, ion mobility, trace analysis of environmental contaminants, and suspect/non-target screening is considered a merit. Short-listed candidates may be required to complete a practical exercise.
