About this position

ETH Zurich invites applications for a fully funded doctoral position in Artistic Research, focusing on the intersection of art and quantum physics. This unique 4-year PhD project, part of the Art in Space and Time (AISAT) initiative, is a collaboration between Prof. Dr. Rosa Barba (Chair of Art in Space and Time, Department of Architecture) and Prof. Dr. Puneet Murthy (Department of Physics, Nanoscale Quantum Optics group). The research explores fundamental phenomena of light and matter, particularly within the quantum physical realm, through a synthesis of artistic and scientific perspectives.

The doctoral candidate will engage in transdisciplinary research combining artistic inquiry, expanded cinematic and installative practices, and quantum optics. The project includes setting up an Art & Science laboratory for exploratory experiments, developing public-facing artistic installations grounded in real physical systems, and contributing to the course 'Understanding Light' embedded in AISAT. The position is based at the Chair of Art in Space and Time, Department of Architecture, with close collaboration with the Nanoscale Quantum Optics group in Physics.

Applicants should have a background in art, architecture, film, or a related field, and demonstrate a body of work expressing crucial inquiries in light, matter, perception, and physical phenomena. The ideal candidate is motivated to work across disciplinary boundaries, is curious about scientific concepts (especially in physics), and is comfortable with laboratory work and experimental research processes. Excellent written and verbal English is required; fluency in other languages is an asset. The doctoral fellow must be based in Switzerland.

ETH Zurich offers a fully funded 4-year doctoral position with a standard salary according to ETH's policy for doctoral students. The university provides access to physics laboratories, artistic research spaces, interdisciplinary networks, and close mentorship from both artistic and scientific supervisors. The environment encourages experimentation, reflection, and innovation, and values diversity and sustainability.

To apply, candidates should submit a single PDF file in English including verification of a Master’s degree, CV (max 5 pages), portfolio with artist statement (max 20 pages), research plan (max 5 pages), and two references with contact details. The application deadline is 30 March 2026. For queries, contact [email protected]. Successful candidates will be enrolled in the Art in Space and Time program within the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich.

ETH Zurich is renowned for its excellence in science and technology, fostering independent thinking and providing an inspiring environment for over 30,000 people from more than 120 countries.
