The Doctoral Programme in Environment and Society at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) offers an interdisciplinary research environment for candidates interested in the complex interrelationship between ecological transformation and societal structures. The programme is based in Munich and is taught primarily in English, with some faculties requiring proficiency in German. It spans six semesters and awards a doctorate by the faculty of the candidate’s primary supervisor, with degree titles reflecting the interdisciplinary nature (Dr rer nat, Dr phil, Dr iur, Dr oec publ, or Dr theol).

The curriculum is designed to foster both disciplinary depth and interdisciplinary collaboration, drawing on fields such as Human Geography, Environmental Humanities, History, American Studies, Anthropology, and Comparative Literature. Candidates participate in weekly international and interdisciplinary colloquia at the Rachel Carson Center, doctoral workshops, and at least one soft skills workshop.
