About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Data Flows to realize Digital Twins in Manufacturing. The successful candidate will join the Division of Production Systems at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science, a vibrant and internationally diverse team dedicated to advancing sustainable, digital, and competitive manufacturing. The research project focuses on enabling the manufacturing industry to utilize Digital Twins for decision-making, supporting the design, operation, and maintenance of production systems. This involves connecting data from databases, sensors, and machines to build digital copies of manufacturing environments, and linking these digital models back to real production systems for updates and edits.
The department is renowned for its excellent research, innovation, and education, contributing to the development of future industrial value chains. The Production Systems Division offers a collaborative and inclusive environment, with strong international networks and advanced research infrastructure, such as the SII-Lab. As a doctoral student, you will take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Product and Production Development, build and evaluate digital twins for production systems, and develop scientific concepts in collaboration with other researchers and industry partners. The position also includes teaching or other duties corresponding to 20% of working hours.
Applicants must have a relevant Master's degree (or a 4-year Bachelor's degree for those educated outside Sweden) in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field, with a focus on production systems, software integration, or data flows. Strong English communication skills are essential. Experience in IT/OT systems for manufacturing, 3D production system design and simulation, sustainability (triple bottom line and circular economy), and social aspects in manufacturing will strengthen your application. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
The position is fully funded, offering a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), with full employee benefits. The contract is for four years, extendable to five years with teaching duties. Chalmers provides a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, with generous social benefits, support for gender equality, and Swedish language courses for international staff. Applications must be submitted in English via the provided online form, including all required documents as PDFs. The deadline for applications is January 1, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Björn Johansson ([email protected]) or Professor Johan Stahre ([email protected]).
