About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in energy systems at the Division of Energy Technology, Department of Environmental and Energy Sciences. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team focused on developing and analyzing sustainable energy systems and conversion technologies for industry and society. The division is renowned for its strong national and international collaborations, uniting experimental and systems research to drive the transition towards carbon-neutral energy and industry.

The energy systems group has extensive experience in energy systems analysis and modeling methodologies, with research projects such as Mistra Electrification and North European Power Perspectives. The group collaborates closely with industries, cities, municipalities, and regions, providing a rich interdisciplinary environment.

The PhD project aims to investigate energy transitions that are both cost-efficient and feasible from technical and socio-technical perspectives. The research will involve developing methods to incorporate reliability, acceptance, and fairness into modeling frameworks, particularly applied to the Nordic energy system. The work requires a strong engineering background and openness to integrating social science perspectives through collaboration with other research groups.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree (or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree for non-Swedish education) in Energy Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Engineering Physics, or equivalent. Strong English communication skills are essential. Experience in techno-economic modeling, energy storage, environmental assessment, interdisciplinary teamwork, and familiarity with algebraic modeling languages (e.g., Julia/JuMP, Python/Pyomo, AMPL, MATLAB, GAMS) is advantageous.

The position is fully funded, offering a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (from May 25, 2025), with full employee benefits. The appointment is for four years, extendable to five years with teaching duties (up to 20%). Doctoral studies require physical presence in Sweden throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

Chalmers offers a vibrant and inclusive working environment in Gothenburg, with support for international staff, including Swedish language courses. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and diversity, and provides generous benefits such as parental leave, subsidized childcare, and healthcare.
