About this position
KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a doctoral student (licentiate) position in soil and rock mechanics, with a specialization in piling. The successful candidate will join the Division of Soil and Rock Mechanics and contribute to the research project “Drivability of Piles in Blocky Ground.” This project addresses the challenges of driven concrete piles encountering boulders in glacial till or eskers, which can lead to structural failure, project delays, and increased costs. The research aims to develop a probabilistic methodology for quantifying the risk of premature refusal during piling, considering both economic and environmental impacts. The outcomes will support risk assessment for various soil stratigraphies and pile types, ultimately providing recommendations for cost-efficient and sustainable piling practices.
The position offers close collaboration with experienced supervisors—Dr. Johan Spross (geotechnical risk management), Dr. Anders Beijer Lundberg (piling), and Dr. Stefan Larsson (geotechnics)—in a supportive and inclusive environment. The licentiate degree is targeted, with the possibility of employment for up to two years, renewable according to regulations. The role is full-time and includes a monthly salary as per KTH's doctoral student salary agreement, along with employee benefits.
Applicants must hold a second cycle degree (such as a master's) or equivalent, with at least 240 higher education credits (including 60 at the second-cycle level) in civil engineering or a related field. Proficiency in English (equivalent to English B/6) is required. Selection criteria include academic excellence, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, analytical skills, and a professional approach. Merits include practical experience in geotechnical engineering, knowledge of statistics and risk analysis, and programming skills. Strong English communication skills are essential, and personal attributes are highly valued in the selection process.
To apply, submit your application via KTH's recruitment system, including certified copies of diplomas, grades, language certificates, CV, a motivation letter, and representative publications. The deadline for applications is April 8, 2026. For further information, contact Dr. Johan Spross at [email protected].
KTH is committed to equality, diversity, and providing a creative, dynamic environment for research and professional growth. Join a leading international technical university and contribute to advancing sustainable construction practices.
