About this position
The University of Twente invites applications for an EngD position focused on film thickness measurement in large bearings, a critical component in systems such as trains, wind turbines, cranes, and other industrial applications. Bearing failures can lead to costly repairs and system downtime, making reliable maintenance and lifetime prediction essential. This project aims to design a system for measuring the lubrication state inside grease-lubricated bearings using advanced electrical methods, enabling real-time condition-based maintenance and optimization of bearing lifetime models.
The research will be embedded within the SKF University Technology Centre (UTC) on grease lubrication and is closely linked to the Surface Technology and Tribology and Tribology Based Maintenance (TBM) chairs. The group is highly international, with a strong history in tribology research, combining experimental work and model development across diverse topics related to degradation and maintenance. The project will involve mechanical and electrical implementation, development of evaluation methodologies, experimental setup construction, validation, and comprehensive reporting including handbook writing.
The measurement system leverages electrical impedance techniques: capacitance is used to determine film thickness, while resistance provides insights into lubricant changes and mixed lubrication conditions. An existing model will be adapted to infer the impedance of all inhomogeneously loaded contacts within the bearing from total measured impedance. The candidate will plan and execute research aligned with project goals, participate in progress meetings, and collaborate with both academic and industrial partners, including active involvement in analysis and experiments.
Applicants should have an MSc degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related field, with excellent academic results and a strong interest in lubrication or tribology. The ideal candidate is curious, motivated for interdisciplinary research, able to work independently, and possesses strong communication skills. Proficiency in English is required, demonstrated by IELTS (minimum score 6.5) or TOEFL-iBT (minimum score 90), unless the MSc program was in English or the applicant is a native English speaker.
The position offers a full-time 2-year EngD contract, a gross monthly salary of €3,029, holiday allowance (8% of annual salary), year-end bonus (8.3%), a solid pension scheme, and a minimum of 29 holidays per year. The University of Twente provides a dynamic, international research environment with excellent facilities and mentorship, supporting both professional and personal development within Graduate School Twente.
To apply, submit your application online before April 2, 2026, including CV, motivation letter, grades, English test scores (if required), and contact information for two references. The selection process includes an interview and scientific presentation. For further information, contact Professor M.B. de Rooij or Dr. N. Bader via email. The Faculty of Engineering Technology (ET) at University of Twente is a leading center for smart production, processes, and devices, with strong connections to research institutes such as Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Center, and Digital Society Institute.
