About this position
This PhD project at Kingston University explores the challenges and opportunities in designing human-centric perception systems for autonomous vehicles (AVs). As AVs become increasingly prevalent, their ability to interact safely and effectively with humans—both inside and outside the vehicle—remains a critical research area. Despite significant advances in sensing, computer vision, and predictive modeling, current AV systems still struggle to interpret the complexity of human behaviour, especially in dynamic and crowded street environments.
Recent studies, such as Galvao et al. (2021) and Mirzabagheri et al. (2025), highlight persistent limitations in pedestrian and vehicle detection models, as well as the difficulty in capturing subtle human interactions and intent. These gaps raise important questions about how 'the human' is represented in AV perception and decision-making, and how design and human-computer interaction (HCI) perspectives can contribute to more responsible and effective models of intent, navigation, and interaction.
Possible research directions for this project include: investigating how different representations of human intent and navigation influence AV system design; prototyping new forms of interaction between AVs and pedestrians; and developing frameworks for socially responsible data integration in AV perception. The project is situated within the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment, offering access to interdisciplinary expertise and resources.
Funding for this position is available through the Graduate School studentships competition for October 2026 entry. The studentship may cover tuition fees and provide a stipend; applicants are encouraged to review the details on the Kingston University PhD Studentships webpage. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research community and work under the supervision of Dr S Zileli, contributing to cutting-edge research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, robotics, and human-computer interaction.
Applicants should have a strong academic background in computer science, robotics, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, or a closely related discipline. Experience with data analysis, programming, and an interest in autonomous systems and human behaviour modeling are desirable. English language proficiency is required for non-native speakers, typically demonstrated by IELTS or equivalent. Additional skills in system design, prototyping, or computer vision will be advantageous.
The application deadline is March 4, 2026. Prospective candidates should review the Graduate School Studentships information and the Faculty research webpage, prepare their application materials, and submit via the university's online portal before the deadline. For further details, visit the project and university links provided.
