Description

[£20,780 annual maintenance grant for 2025/26 (subject to change), full coverage of PhD programme fees, HE teacher training and practice, £700 per year GTF allowance from Year 2, Conference Support Scheme. Not compatible with other studentships such as NWSSDTP and China Scholarship Council.] The University of Liverpool Management School is offering fully funded Graduate Teaching Fellowships (GTFs) for Economics PhD students, providing a unique opportunity to launch your academic career with comprehensive financial and professional support. These prestigious 4-year fellowships are designed for candidates planning to begin their Economics PhD in October 2026, combining advanced research training with hands-on teaching experience in higher education. As a GTF, you will receive a substantial annual maintenance grant of £20,780 (for 2025/26, subject to change), full coverage of PhD programme fees, and access to a formal HE teacher training programme in your first year. This training equips you with essential pedagogical skills and a teaching qualification, enhancing your employability in academia. Throughout your PhD, you will engage in mentored classroom involvement and gradually take on teaching responsibilities, gaining valuable experience for the academic job market. The fellowship is open to applicants with a UK master's degree or international equivalent in economics or a related discipline, preferably at merit or above. Strong quantitative and programming skills are required, and you must submit a robust research proposal in areas such as microeconomics theory, applied microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, financial econometrics, political economy, industrial organisation, or sports economics. The programme encourages you to suggest potential supervisors, including Dr Balazs Murakozy (Economics PhD Director of Studies), Professor Nick de Roos, and Professor Ian Burn (Economics Group Co-Directors of Research), though final supervisor assignment will be determined by the School. Additional financial support includes a £700 per year GTF allowance from Year 2 and access to the Conference Support Scheme. GTFs are compatible with external bursaries and other postgraduate research funds offered by the Management School, but not with other studentships such as those from the North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership or the China Scholarship Council. To apply, prepare your research proposal, academic transcripts, degree certificates, personal statement (with 'ULMS-GTF-2026 studentship' in the title), CV, and contact details for two referees. International applicants must also provide passport details and English language certificates. Applications are submitted online via the University of Liverpool portal, selecting 'Economics – Doctor in Philosophy (PhD)' and entering 'ULMS-GTF-2026' as the funding source. The deadline for round one applications is 2 January 2026 at 5pm UK time. After submission, you will receive an email acknowledgment and further instructions regarding the next steps, including possible interview invitations. This fellowship offers a comprehensive package for aspiring economics researchers, combining financial security, research excellence, and teaching development at a leading UK institution. For further information or advice on supervisors, you are encouraged to contact the Management School’s Postgraduate Research Team.
