Full-time PhD position in Knowledge Engineering and Information Systems (MSCA Doctoral Network: CHARM) Technical University of Crete in Greece

The Technical University of Crete, in collaboration with the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), offers a full-time PhD position within the MSCA Doctoral Network CHARM. The research focuses on knowledge engineering and information systems, specifically developing workflow, data models, and tools for managing architectural heritage conservation data. The project aims to create a common data model for integrating diverse data types (climate, environmental, materials properties, images, etc.) collected during conservation projects. This involves continuous collaboration with domain experts to design an ontology-based schema, supporting efficient data collection, consolidation, and integration.

Key objectives include designing user-friendly workflows and software tools that facilitate data management for humanities researchers, enabling both researchers and software systems (such as AI models) to access integrated data via dedicated interfaces and APIs. Expected outcomes are a workflow model for managing architectural heritage conservation data, a CIDOC CRM compatible ontology, software tools for data management, and APIs/services for data access.

The CHARM project develops sustainable conservation and restoration solutions for architectural heritage, considering climate adaptation, circular economy principles, and socio-economic requirements. The doctoral network offers international, interdisciplinary research and training, with opportunities for mobility and collaboration across Europe. The PhD programme is hosted at the School of Production Engineering and Management, Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece, and supervised by Dr. Pavlos Fafalios (academic profile).

Employment conditions include a 3-year full-time contract, a highly competitive salary (3,440.91€ gross per month, including living and mobility allowances, plus family allowance if applicable), and full social security coverage. The position is funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (Horizon Europe). Desired qualifications include experience in Semantic Web technologies, data modelling, knowledge representation, and cultural informatics or digital humanities. Eligibility criteria require that applicants have not resided or carried out their main activity in Greece for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to recruitment.
