About this position
Loughborough University’s School of Design and Creative Arts is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD in Transdisciplinary Design and Creative Arts, with a focus on Inclusive Design and Ageing. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in addressing the global challenges of ageing populations through innovative design and creative arts research. The research area explores how environments, products, and services can empower older adults, reduce barriers to social participation, and foster dignity, independence, and intergenerational equity.
Projects may address age-related changes in mobility, cognition, and sensory perception, and are encouraged to avoid stereotypes while promoting inclusive and age-friendly solutions. Research questions may include: How can design and creative arts anticipate and adapt to the evolving needs of ageing populations? What role can co-design and creative methods play in creating age-friendly technologies and spaces? How can inclusive design principles be embedded in policy and practice across sectors?
The School is ranked third in the UK for Art and Design and 39th in the world (QS World Rankings by subject 2025). It offers a dynamic research environment with expertise in human factors, ergonomics, product design, user experience, digital futures, graphic design, fine art, textiles, fashion, and storytelling. Collaboration with gerontologists, technologists, and community stakeholders is encouraged, and projects may span Environmental Ergonomics and Transport Safety Research Centres, healthcare, housing, digital accessibility, and cultural engagement.
The studentship is open to both Home and International candidates and is fully funded, covering tuition fees and providing a stipend for living expenses. The PhD can be pursued full-time (3 years) or part-time (6 years), with a start date in October 2026. Applicants should hold or expect to achieve at least a high 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. A relevant Master’s degree and/or employment experience is advantageous. English language requirements apply for non-native speakers.
