The LANE research group, led by Dr. Yongfeng Lu, Lott University Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), is actively recruiting motivated and talented graduate students for PhD candidate positions. Established in 2002, LANE is a leading research lab focused on pioneering laser-based applications and engineering. The lab’s diverse research includes laser-material interactions, laser surface engineering, laser system development, nanofabrication, advanced spectroscopy and microscopy imaging, nonlinear response, plasma physics, biomedical applications, and machine learning for big data analysis.
About the group leader: Dr. Yongfeng Lu is a recognized expert in the field of nanotechnology using lasers. He has published over 600 articles in peer-reviewed journals, made presentations at international conferences, and received a number of international awards (e.g. National Technology Award, Singapore, International Laser Award, Germany, and Schawlow Award, USA ). He has served as the President of the Laser Institute of America (LIA) and as keynote speaker and session chair/co-chair for multiple international laser conferences. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief for J. Laser Applications and Int. J. Extreme Manufacturing. The LANE team has secured over $40 million in funding from various agencies across the U.S to support groundbreaking research.
Research Areas: The LANE research group offers PhD candidate positions at the forefront of interdisciplinary materials science and engineering research, including: Nanofabrication through two-photon polymerization (TPP) lithography; Advanced 3D Imaging with coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) techniques; Laser Surface Engineering through various laser systems to address real-world challenges; Laser Spectroscopy for in-depth exploration of laser-matter interactions; and AI-Enhanced Spectroscopic Sensing for biological and biomedical applications.
Why Join LANE? LANE offers an equal, supportive, resource-rich environment, providing training, mentorship, and sufficient funding to promote students' learning, discovery, and professional growth. Students will engage in impactful projects and collaborate with leading experts in the field.
Ideal Candidates: We’re seeking passionate candidates with backgrounds in physics, engineering, material sciences, optics, or related fields. Laboratory experience with laser systems, nanofabrication, or microscopy techniques is highly beneficial. How to Apply: Please submit (1) a resume/CV detailing relevant coursework, skills, and experiences, and (2) an academic transcript to Dr. Lu’s email at [email protected] or via WeChat ID: yongfeng_lu.
