About this position
Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is seeking a highly motivated Materials Engineer or Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Laboratory for Building Energy Materials and Components. The laboratory specializes in developing advanced, low eco-impact porous materials for insulation, sorption, and energy-related applications, with a strong focus on aerogels and aerogel composites. This innovation project leverages Empa’s extensive expertise in silica aerogels and product development, and is conducted in close collaboration with a large industrial enterprise.
The project aims to develop high-performance materials and systems based on silica aerogel, with objectives including elucidating synthesis routes and their effects on composite properties, optimizing thermal and mechanical properties, streamlining production processes for scale-up, and integrating aerogel composites into larger systems. The successful candidate will play a leading role in shaping and executing the project, coordinating activities with industrial partners, supervising intern students, designing and executing synthesis strategies, investigating material properties, characterizing aerogels and composites, analyzing experimental data, and contributing to patent applications. Up to 20% of the role may involve leading adjacent scientific research lines and contributing to publications.
Applicants should possess a doctoral or master's degree in materials engineering, sol-gel chemistry, or a closely related field, with hands-on experience in aerogel synthesis and/or aerogel composites. Experience with scale-up, industry collaboration, adhesives selection, bonding optimization, and porous materials characterization techniques (such as nitrogen sorption, SEM, TEM, TGA, FTIR, NMR, and thermal conductivity measurements) is beneficial but not mandatory. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. The position offers a stimulating, international, and collaborative research environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, attractive employment conditions, and opportunities for professional and personal development. Empa values inclusion and respect, welcoming all applicants interested in innovative, sustainable, and meaningful activities.
The start date is May 2026 or upon agreement, with a duration of two years. To apply, candidates must submit a complete online application including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons via the Empa job portal. Applications sent by e-mail or post will not be considered. For further details and to access the application portal, use the provided link.
