About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering, focuses on developing novel Micro/Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS/NEMS) switches to dramatically reduce the stand-by power consumption of integrated quantum circuits. The research aims to design and prototype RF/DC MEMS/NEMS switches optimized for low temperature operation, leveraging their ultralow off-state current due to mechanical separation—a significant advantage over conventional semiconductor switches like FETs. The project will utilize Southampton's cleanroom facilities for device fabrication and will investigate suitable contact materials for reliable low temperature performance. These optimized switches will be integrated into quantum circuits, such as those used in quantum computers and sensors, to evaluate and enhance overall energy efficiency.

The project offers substantial training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills, and the supervisory team maintains strong collaborative links with research institutions in Japan and potential industry partners. Funding is competitive, with UK students eligible for a 4-year UKRI TechExpert stipend of approximately £31k per year, and studentships at the UKRI base rate available for EU, Horizon Europe, and international students. Overseas applicants with external funding are also encouraged to apply.
