About this position
Tampere University invites applications for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) Doctoral Candidate position in integrated circuits and signal processing for large-array transceivers in next-generation communication systems. This opportunity is part of the EU-funded MSCA Doctoral Network ANCHOR, which brings together leading universities and industry partners to train doctoral candidates in advanced communication technologies. The research focuses on developing energy-efficient, high-performance integrated circuit architectures for large-array transceivers, with emphasis on beamforming, near-field, and advanced receiver signal processing. The successful candidate will contribute to the advancement of next-generation wireless infrastructures, addressing challenges such as spectrum harmonization, 3D coverage, mobility, latency, capacity, and energy efficiency.
The position offers interdisciplinary research, international secondments (6 months at University College London and 4 months at Altice Labs, Portugal), and structured cross-sectoral training. Candidates will develop and validate signal processing concepts, design hardware architectures, perform system-level modelling and simulations, and experimentally characterize integrated circuit prototypes. Results will be disseminated through international journals and conferences, and collaboration with other doctoral candidates in the ANCHOR network is encouraged.
Applicants must not hold a PhD degree and must have a relevant master’s degree (electrical engineering, computer engineering, or closely related discipline) by the employment start date (between 01.08.2026 and 31.12.2026). The MSCA mobility rule applies: candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Finland for more than 12 cumulative months in the 36 months before recruitment. Strong written and spoken English skills are required, and formal English language requirements must be fulfilled by the time of enrollment. Experience in signal processing, system-level modelling, numerical simulation tools (MATLAB, Python), digital circuit and DSP hardware design, ASIC design methodologies, analog/RF circuit design, and EDA tools is advantageous.
The doctoral candidate will be guided by a distinguished supervisory team: Assistant Professor Vishnu Unnikrishnan, Associate Professor Bo Tan, Professor Elena Simona Lohan, and Professor Mikko Valkama. The SoC Hub ecosystem supports IC tape out activities, and the position is based at Tampere University’s Hervanta campus, a major Nordic technology hub with modern laboratories and advanced research infrastructure. Comprehensive support services and staff benefits include occupational health care, flexible working arrangements, sports facilities, and campus restaurants.
This is a fully funded 36-month fixed-term doctoral position within the MSCA framework. The estimated gross monthly salary is approximately €3,950 (without family allowance) or €4,450 (with family allowance), with an annual holiday bonus and salary increments under the Finnish collective labor agreement. Tampere is Finland’s second-largest urban area, offering a vibrant innovation ecosystem and high quality of life. Finland is known for its safety, stability, and comprehensive public healthcare and social security system, making it an attractive destination for international researchers and their families.
Applications must be submitted through Tampere University’s online recruitment system by 7 April 2026. Required documents include a cover letter, CV, degree certificates, transcripts, and contact details for at least two referees. Additional supporting documents (e.g., proof of English proficiency, recommendation letters) may be included. For further information, contact Prof. Vishnu Unnikrishnan or Prof. Mikko Valkama at [email protected] or [email protected].
