About this position
The Department of Marine Technology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position focused on maritime fleet optimization under regulatory uncertainty, as part of the FME MarTrans research center. This project addresses the challenge of achieving zero emission shipping by 2050, in line with International Maritime Organization (IMO) goals, by developing models that integrate strategic fleet renewal, retrofit decisions, operational strategies, and evolving regulatory frameworks. The research aims to provide decision support for shipowners and policymakers navigating complex technical, commercial, and regulatory environments.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant international research community, collaborating closely with over 60 PhD students and industry partners, including SINTEF, the main research partner. FME MarTrans is an eight-year, NOK 300 million collaborative project funded by the Research Council of Norway and 65 maritime industry and research partners, making it the world’s largest maritime research program of its kind. Duties include completing doctoral education, conducting high-level research, publishing academic and popular science outputs, participating in research groups, collaborating with industry and academic partners, and engaging in international activities such as conferences or research stays abroad.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree (marine technology, industrial engineering, systems engineering, logistics, operations research, or similar), demonstrate strong academic performance (grade B or better), and possess skills in systems analysis, optimization, and/or operations research. Proficiency in English is required. Preferred qualifications include programming and data analysis experience, maritime industry background, and knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.
The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and excellent facilities at the new Ocean Technology Center in Trondheim. The employment period is three years, with possible extension for teaching duties. The application process requires submission of academic transcripts, CV, thesis, motivation letter, and referee contacts via Jobbnorge.no by the deadline. NTNU values diversity and encourages applications from all qualified candidates.
The city of Trondheim offers a high quality of life, excellent public services, and a vibrant cultural scene.
