About this position

This PhD position at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) focuses on advancing smart yard operations for offshore wind manufacturing. The successful candidate will research the application of smart technologies, such as digital twins and virtual models, to visualize and optimize yard operations. These technologies enable the collection, analysis, and representation of data from diverse sources, improving the visibility and coordination of products, resources, materials, and activities. The project, 'TWinYards - Scaling up for offshore wind at Norwegian yards: Efficient operations through digital twins and artificial intelligence,' aims to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of Norwegian yards in the global offshore wind industry, supporting the green energy transition. The candidate will collaborate closely with industry partners, including Ulstein, Brunvoll, and Aker Solutions, and contribute to use-cases defined by the TWinYards project. The research will be conducted within NTNU’s Production Management research group, part of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, which is internationally recognized for its applied research in engineer-to-order manufacturing. The position involves applying both qualitative methodologies (case studies, literature reviews) and quantitative approaches (simulation, analytical modelling) to develop frameworks and decision support tools for efficient planning and coordination of manufacturing operations. The candidate will participate in NTNU’s PhD research education program, conduct independent research, publish in scientific journals, and present at international conferences. Applicants must have a relevant master’s degree (Industrial Engineering, Logistics Engineering, Production Management, Supply Chain Management, Mechanical Engineering, or Project Management) with a strong academic record (B or better on NTNU’s scale). Good English communication skills and experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods in operations and supply chain management are required. Preferred qualifications include Scandinavian language skills and prior experience in engineer-to-order manufacturing. The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800 for three years, membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, working capital for the project, and free basic Norwegian language training. Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in Industrial Engineering, Logistics Engineering, Production Management, Supply Chain Management, Mechanical Engineering, or Project Management, corresponding to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at the master's level. Master students may apply but must complete their degree before starting. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on the NTNU scale or equivalent. Candidates with weaker grades may be considered if they can document particular suitability for PhD education. Good oral and written English skills are required. Experience with qualitative and quantitative methodologies in operations and supply chain management is expected. Preferred criteria include Scandinavian language skills and prior experience in engineer-to-order manufacturing. Admission to the PhD programme in Engineering within three months of employment is required.
